Tanner
My body shakes as the door rattles behind me.
With every hit, the wood splinters a little more, Luca’s voice absolutely raging with her demands that I let her go, open the door, take a long walk off a short pier into shark infested waters.
I knew better than to tell her the plans I had for her. Knew she wouldn’t exactly take it lying down. But I didn’t expect this much of a fight. Didn’t expect her to lose her shit and make me regret the decision.
This is the second time I’ve fucked up with her, and as I lean against the door, holding it closed so that an annoying as hell woman doesn’t come barreling through in her attempt to end my life, I’m left thinking about why my game is thrown off every time I’m near her.
I’ve been doing this since high school. Trapping people. Making deals. Ruining lives as I call in my price for whatever ridiculous favor they think I did for them.
And I never get caught with my pants down. Never find myself wishing to just end the game because it’s become too much of a pain in the ass to continue.
Then Luca entered my life, and here we are. She’s threatening to destroy the room around her, and I’m wondering why I didn’t wait until I had backup to tell her the truth of what I’ve done.
It’s why I asked Gabriel to come by with the other guys. For a schedule. To split up the time we’ll all have to watch over her to ensure she doesn’t escape and hide.
At least until she gives us what we want.
After that, Luca is free to go. I can crush her fuckwit for a husband, which is an added bonus, and send her off with enough money to start over.
Because this has never been about her.
I couldn’t help myself, though.
I never can help myself with her.
She fascinates me in ways I’ve never felt before.
“Damn it, Tanner! If you don’t open this door...”
Another threat. She’s made over a hundred of them at this point. Really, there’s nothing she can do. I won’t move. Won’t let her out until I have several other people here to help chase her down and tackle her to the ground, if necessary.
She’s like a spitting cat, this woman.
The door bangs harder, my body jerking forward with the movement. Trying not to laugh at what I assume was Luca throwing her entire body at it, I check my watch and grit my teeth, wishing like hell I had my phone so I can call Gabriel and demand he come over to calm this situation down.
But no. I left it on the kitchen counter when Luca suddenly took off at a dead run through my house, her hand landing on the knob of the front door just as I’d grabbed her and hauled her ass up the stairs to a guest room.
I’m not equipped for this shit and have no way of locking her in except to stand here.
